Over the last 20 years or so I have had the pleasure of receiving thousands of CVs from people in all walks of life and I have been constantly amazed at the rubbish that many people write on their CVs.
Many times I have put a CV down and not had a single clue what the person was like as an individual or even what they actually do.
What you say on your CV must be descriptive, accurate and concise, and should leave the reader in no doubt as to your capabilities, experience and personality.
More than that, it needs to be convincing, inspiring, and ultimately compelling in the language and statements used.
These robust statements should be supported by quantifiable achievements – examples of when and where what you have said on the CV has been demonstrated.
Do not pad it out with unnecessary and ambiguous statements.
Sections lifted from your HR-written job description are also to be avoided as they describe function and give little indication of what you actually do or are good at.
Writing a CV is a skill that has to be learned and developed through experience - experience that most people do not have, so it is not surprising that many of them do not produce the desired result ie an interview.
